FINDING YOUR RHYTHM

Writer's picture: Kendall TrewernKendall Trewern

My Pastor recently said, “We talk about finding our place in this world, but we also need to find our pace in this world.”

How often do you find yourself out of rhythm in life? You’re in a hurry, you neglect your daily devotions, you don’t make time for your personal growth and before you know it, your good habits have been replaced with negative ones.

Then you try to make up for lost time, you take on too much, trying to become the person you know you should be, but you try to cram a year’s worth of growth into one month, you can’t keep it up and you crash. The endless cycle.

Remember this: on-going consistency is more important than short term intensity.

This is why I do 5 things every day, and I’ve been doing those same 5 things every day for 9 years. Because, If you’re not growing daily, you’re dying gradually.

Here’s my “Daily 5”

1. Read

2. Pray

3. Ask

4. File

5. Contact

So here’s the breakdown:

1. READ – Every day, I read the bible and something else. (from a book, blog or article)

If the only time you spend in the word is when you are writing a sermon or a lesson, you are not a son or daughter of God, you are a business associate. And think about this: in the next 5 years, you could read 60 books. All you'd have to do is read a book a month, which boils down to 6 pages a day. How long does it take to read 6 pages? 5 minutes.

2. PRAY – Every day, I pray about something real.

You could radically transform your soul, growing closer to God than ever before. Think about it. Jesus promised those who seek me will find me. The problem isn't unanswered prayers, the problem is that prayers we never prayed.

3. ASK – Every day, I ask at least one question that will help me learn or grow.

Here are some examples of questions I ask:

· What is the greatest lesson you’ve ever learned?

· What are you learning right now?

· How has failure shaped your life?

· What have you read that I should read?

· What have you done that I should do?

· Who do you know that I should know?

· What do you see in me that needs to change or improve?

· How can I add value to you?

If you’re not asking questions, the only thoughts or opinions you are getting are your own.

4. FILE – Every day, I file an idea away.

The average person forgets 4 things a day. So why do you think you’ll remember the thing you saw or heard? “Oh yeah, I’m gonna remember that.” No, you won’t. Write it down. Take a picture of it. Then file it away in specific places. (Evernote, Dropbox, iCloud Notes, whatever system works for you.)

5. CONTACT – Every day, I make at least one contact with at least one student.

I am called to be a youth pastor. Why would I not do something to love students every day when God has called me to be someone who loves students?

The point is, BE CONSISTENT. Choose your daily 5, it might look completely different than mine, but that’s because God has created you to be different than me. But the most important thing isn’t what your daily 5 is, it’s that you actually do it. Every single day.

Because the ways you let in become the ways you are set in.
